Are your energy levels low and you’ve very little motivation towards movement? There are some simple little hacks to help you get a little bit more energised, because movement is energy – at the right pace, the right intensity, and the right type of movement.
When I wake up and I’m feeling tired, I will make a real effort to move more. It’ll only be low level movement, like standing or walking or getting up frequently, but I find that gives me the energy I need on a tired day just to keep myself feeling good about the day and motivated to want to do things.
A few ways that you can hack more movement would be to stand up during meetings or have walking meetings. Make sure you’re not sitting for longer than 30 minutes. Take some things off your desk if you’re an office worker, so you have to actually move to one side of the office to get something or move to the other side of the office to pick up some water, for example.
If you can, walk into work or walk part of your journey. Start getting in the habit of moving a little bit more, being a bit more dynamic. As individuals, think back to ancestral times – we were very dynamic then. We were working in caves, in little camps outside caves, walking, foraging, scurrying, sharpening instruments, possibly squatting to tend to our young. We need to get back into that pattern of light level activity – it’s highly energising.
If I want to energise myself for a big event, I’ll work out. But it won’t necessarily be a huge workout. And I’ll always walk between meetings to keep myself sharp. Walking also encourages neurogenesis which is the production of new brain cells. It helps us to create more brain cells, it helps to remember things and it helps to spark creativity as well.
So movement is absolutely key. Take this day as maybe a bit of inspiration, a bit of motivation – get out there, move a bit more.
